Macedonian Red Cross was founded on March 17.03.1975; Macedonian Red Cross was recognized as a National Society by the International Committee of the Red Cross on 01/11/1995 and on 27/11/1975 MRC became a full member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies as a 169 member of the International movement. Main preconditions for recognition of Macedonian Red Cross are:

  • The Government of Republic of Macedonia ratified the Geneva Conventions of 12 .08.1949 and Additional Protocols of 1977 on 25.08.1993 2. The Macedonian Parliament on July 26, 1994 adopted the Macedonian Red Cross Law.

Macedonian Red Cross is the only National Society organization in the Republic of Macedonia, comprised of 34 Red Cross branches and the City Red Cross of Skopje. The Macedonian Red Cross is a voluntary, large, non-governmental, and independent humanitarian organization of the citizens of Macedonia. The position and tasks of the Red Cross, the use and protection of the emblem and the name of the Red Cross, as well as the financing of the tasks of the Red Cross are stipulated in a special Law on Macedonian Red Cross (Official. Gazette No. 41/94). The Statutes of the Red Cross stipulate the layout and structure of the organization and basic objectives which are in line with the Statute of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Mission of the Macedonian Red Cross
To prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it is, to protect life and health, to ensure respect and dignity of the human being, especially in times of armed conflict, accidents and disasters, to work on prevention of disease and promotion of health and social being of people, to encourage voluntary engagement and constant readiness to provide assistance and universal sense of solidarity and humanity.

“Macedonian Red Cross is a humanitarian, voluntary organization acting in accordance with basic principles of the international movement of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, working in the field of providing assistance and services to vulnerable people and promoting international humanitarian law and human values.”

The Macedonian Red Cross conducts its activities in accordance with the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which are incorporated in all programme areas such as health-preventive care,  disaster management and response, dissemination, social-humanitarian activities whereas the emphasis is on the programme of care for older people (mobile teams for the home care for older people, daily centres for older people and  clubs for older people and traditional activities aimed at raising public awareness of the rights of older people and the necessary support and assistance to older people).
